Wix vs. Custom Website: Honest 2026 Comparison

Wix vs. custom websites compared on SEO, speed, ownership, and cost so small businesses pick the right stack the first time.

Quick answer

Wix is a solid platform for fast launches, simple sites, and businesses that prioritize convenience over performance ceilings. A custom website wins when you need faster mobile load times, deeper SEO control, custom integrations, full ownership, or a design that does not look like a template. For most Utah small businesses serious about ranking against competitors, custom-built sites outperform Wix on Core Web Vitals, schema flexibility, and long-term ownership. For side hustles, brand-new businesses validating an idea, or sites where SEO does not drive revenue, Wix is genuinely fine.

What Wix is genuinely good at

I have looked at hundreds of small business sites built on Wix, and dunking on the platform misses the point. Wix earns its market share for real reasons.

  • Time to launch. A determined business owner can have a basic Wix site live in a weekend. Template selection, drag-and-drop editing, hosting, SSL, and a contact form all come bundled. No engineer required.
  • Predictable cost. Wix Premium plans run roughly $17–$60/month depending on tier. No surprise hosting bills, no upgrade gotchas on the basic features most small businesses need.
  • Bundled essentials. Hosting, SSL, basic backups, image CDN, and DDoS protection ship in the box. For a non-technical owner, that is one less thing to think about every quarter.
  • Acceptable mobile output. Modern Wix templates render mobile-first by default. Not great, not terrible, but acceptable for low-competition niches.
  • App marketplace. Need a booking widget, a chat tool, or a basic CRM hookup? The Wix App Market handles common SMB integrations without code.

If your business is brand new, validating a concept, or purely transactional with no SEO requirements, Wix can serve you for years.

Where Wix quietly caps you

The trade-offs are real, and they show up exactly when your business starts gaining traction.

Performance ceiling on mobile

Wix sites carry the platform's JavaScript bundle on every page load, regardless of which features you actually use. Public Core Web Vitals field data has consistently shown Wix sites lagging custom-built sites on Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint, particularly on mid-tier mobile devices over cellular. You can optimize images and lazy-load within the platform, but you cannot strip out what the platform itself ships.

SEO flexibility limits

Wix has improved meaningfully since 2018, and basic on-page SEO works fine. The ceiling shows up at the technical level:

  • Limited control over URL structure beyond a few path templates
  • JSON-LD schema is constrained to what Wix's SEO tools and apps expose
  • Server response and caching headers are managed by the platform, not you
  • robots.txt and sitemap.xml are auto-generated with limited customization
  • Internal linking architecture is harder to engineer cleanly across complex content clusters

For uncompetitive local searches, none of this matters. For competitive Utah verticals like Salt Lake City HVAC or Provo dental, the gap between a Wix site and a fast custom site is the difference between page two and the local pack.

Vendor lock-in

The most underappreciated cost of Wix is portability. You cannot meaningfully export your Wix site to another platform. You can pull blog posts via RSS and download your images one at a time, but the design, structure, custom forms, and platform-specific logic stay on Wix. Leaving the platform means rebuilding from scratch, which makes the switching cost much higher than a typical CMS migration.

Design ceiling

Wix templates start to look like Wix templates. Custom CSS and Wix Studio extend that ceiling, but you are still working inside a system designed for non-technical users. For brands that need a distinctive presence, that ceiling shows up sooner than owners expect.

The cost truth over five years

A common Wix vs. custom comparison stops at the launch number and declares Wix cheaper. That is not the full picture for a business that intends to grow.

YearWix Premium (mid tier)Custom site (mid tier)
Year 1~$400 plan plus add-ons$4,500 build plus $1,200 maintenance
Year 2~$420 plan plus add-ons$1,200 maintenance
Year 3~$420 plan plus add-ons$1,200 maintenance
Year 4~$420 plan plus add-ons$1,200 maintenance
Year 5~$420 plan plus add-ons$1,200 maintenance
Total over 5 years~$2,080~$10,500

The custom site costs roughly 5x more over five years. The real question is whether the performance and SEO ceiling on Wix costs you more than $8,500 in lost leads over those five years. For competitive local markets, that math often favors custom by year two or three.

When Wix is genuinely the right call

Pick Wix when:

  1. You are validating a new business and have not committed to the venture for the long haul.
  2. Your service is non-competitive locally and SEO does not drive your business.
  3. You need to be live in two weeks with no other options.
  4. You are a solo operator with no budget and prefer building it yourself.
  5. Your site is a digital business card, not a lead-generation engine.

There is no shame in this list. A working Wix site beats a stalled custom build every day of the week.

Five signals you have outgrown Wix

When you see most of these, the arithmetic starts favoring custom:

  1. Mobile load times above three seconds that platform optimization cannot fix.
  2. Lost organic rankings to faster, more SEO-flexible competitors in your service area.
  3. Custom integrations (HubSpot, Salesforce, custom booking flows, internal tooling) the platform cannot support cleanly.
  4. Brand maturity that makes template aesthetics hurt rather than help credibility.
  5. Monthly Wix costs above $60 when stacking Business plans, premium apps, and add-ons, suggesting the platform is being pushed past its design intent.

What migration actually involves

If you decide to leave Wix, the process is more involved than a typical CMS migration because of the platform lock-in:

  1. Content audit of every page and post, including images, alt text, and metadata.
  2. URL mapping with 301 redirects from old Wix URLs to new structure.
  3. Manual rebuild of design and content on the new platform (no clean automated import).
  4. DNS and email cutover with minimal downtime, ideally on a weekend.
  5. Search Console resubmission and active monitoring for 60–90 days post-launch.

Expect 3–6 weeks for the migration itself plus 60–90 days of post-launch SEO recovery. Done well, most businesses see organic traffic match pre-migration levels within 90 days and exceed them within six months.

The bottom line

Wix is a real tool for real use cases, and the platform earns its place at the small end of the market. The ceiling is real, the lock-in is real, and the SEO and performance gap to custom widens in competitive markets.

For most Utah small businesses serious about ranking, generating leads, and owning their digital presence, a custom site pays for itself within two to three years through better conversion and organic visibility. For everyone else, Wix is fine.
